- The Manggarai people of Flores believe that the spirit of the dead, called poti stay where they used to stay when they were alive, especially near the bed. After some time, the poti “live” in wells, big trees, or crossroads near the house. These spirits are believed to be watching their grandchildren although they do not disturb or tease living people. When their grandchildren are in danger, the poti are there to help them. However, this is believed to last only five days for then the poti will leave for Mori Karaeng. Mori Karaeng is a place for the dead. The Manggarai people believe that everything in More Karaeng is the opposite of that in the world of the living. So, people break dishes and glasses on the day the dead are supposed to leave for Mori Karaeng, so that there they have the things in a good condition.
- Once there was an Indian who had a pet fish named Tommy which he kept in a barrel. But the fish got pretty big and the Indian had to change the water a good deal to keep him alive. He was too lazy to do that, and he thought he would teach the fish to live out of water. So he did.
- Electrical energy is derived from the sun indirectly. It can be derived from the power of water falling down a mountainside. The water falls as rain, which is formed by the evaporation of the water on the earth’s surface, by means of the sun’s heat. This water vapour rises, condenses on cooling, and falls as rain.
- Prices this year are higher than prices were last year, and next yearthings will cost even more than they do now. There are, however, many ways to save money. Try to pay the lowest possible prices for the items that you need. Here some suggestions:-Compare prices of similar products. Some brands are much more expensive than other brands, and the quality may not be much better. The quality of generic brands, which come in plainer packages than the more famous “name brand”, may be just as good as the quality of the higher-priced items.-Take advantage of as many sales as possible, but check that every “bargain” price is really lower than the regular price.-Before you go shopping, make a list of the items that are the most important of all to you and buy only those things! Don’t buy things that you don’t need just because they are cheaper than usual and don’t buy items just to “keep up” with your friends!
- Gestures refer to specific body movements that carry meaning. Hands can form shapes that convey many meaning: “That’s expensive”, “Come here”, and “It’s OK” can be expressed non verbally using only hands. The gestures for these phrases may differ among cultures. As children we imitate and learn these body movements and often use them to accompany or replace words.<

5. Sheep’s foot rollers compact earth again once it has been dropped into position. The heavy rollers on these machines havr large metal studs that force particles of soil together. They are used wherever the soil must be made firm, such as on the road route itself and on the embankments around the bridges.

The Condor and the Albatross are extremely large birds with massive wingspans. The main difference is the Condor is a land bird whereas the Albatross is a sea bird. The other difference is that the Californian Condor is rare and the Albatross is common.

Perhaps the most extraordinary building of the nineteenth century was The Crystal Palace which was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851.
The Crystal Palace was different from all other buildings in the world, for it was made of iron and glass. It was one of the biggest buildings of all time and a lot of people from many countries came to see it.
A great many goods were sent to the exhibition from various parts of the world. There was also a great deal of machinery on display. The most wonderful piece of machinery on show was Nasmyth’s steam hammer.
Though in those days, travelling was not as easy as it is today, steam boats carried thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe. On arriving in England , they were taken to the Crystal Palace by train. There were six million visitors in all, and the profits from the exhibition were used to build museums and colleges. Later, The Crystal Palace was moved to South London. It remained one of the most famous buildings in the world until it was burnt in 1936.

Moscow. A Russian journalist has uncovered evidence of another Soviet nuclear catastrope, which killed 10 sailors and contaminated an entire town.
Yelena Vazrshavskya is the first journalist to speak to people who witnessed the explosion of a nuclear submarine at the naval base of Shkotovo – 22 near Vladivostock.
The accident ,which occurred 13 months before the Chernobyl disaster , spread radio active fall – out over the base and nearby town, but was covered up by officials of the Soviet Union. Residents were told the explosion in the reactor of the Victor- class submarine during a refil had been a ‘ thermal’ and not a nuclear explosion. And those involved in the clean up operation to remove more than 600 tones of contaminated material were sworn to secrecy.
A board of investigators was later to describe it as the worst accident in the history of the Soviet Navy.

Smoking in restaurants is just not on. It must not be allowed because it is rude, harmful to others and dangerous for the smoker
Firstly, smoking in restaurants is impolite . The smell of the smoke affects all people and can turn them off their food. People pay to taste good food and not to be put off by foul-smelling smoke.
Another reason smoking should not be allowed in restaurants is the harm it can do to others.Passive smoking, that is, breathing in smoke made by a smoker, can led to asthma and even cancer.
Finally, smoking is dangerous and a health risk to the smoker. Cigarettes cause heart and lung disease and people should not smoke anywhere , not just in restaurants.
Therefore, smoking in restaurants is impolite, harmful to others and a helath risk to the smoker and should not be allowed in any restaurants.

Dolphins are sea mammals. They have to breathe or they will die. They are members of the Delphimidae family.
Dolphins have smooth bare skin. Only baby dolphins are born with a few bristly hairs on their snouts. These hairs soon fall out . They have a long tail and the fin on top of their backs keeps the dolphins from rolling over . The female dolphins have a thick layer of fat under their skins to keep them warm when they dive very deep. The dolphins’ front fins are called flippers. They use them to turn left and right. Dolphins grow from 2 to 3 metres long and weigh up to 75 kilograms.
Dolphins hunt together in a group. A group of dolphins is called a pod. They eat fish, shrimp and small squid. They live in salt water oceans. Dolphins can hold breath for six minutes.

On the week end of the 3rd of March, I went to the Ryde BMX track with Robert and Chris Macdonald.
When we got there ,it was very crowded in the carpark and we wondered where everyone was because there weren’t many people on the BMX track.
So we parked the car and then we saw a lot of people surrounding a little track with speeding cars going around it. There were also about five people controlling the cars from a high platform. The cars were about 30 cms long and 15 cms wide with big tread on the tyres and a flap on the front , so that they wouldn’t tip over.
Then after the races , they were awarding trophies to the winners. When we were just going, a boy was controlling a car around the track and it was going very fast.

Speech production is made possible by the specialized movements of our vocal organs that generate speech sounds waves.
Like all sound production, speech production requires a source of energy. The source of energy for speech production is the steady stream of air that comes from the lungs as we exhale. When we breathe normally, the air stream is inaudible. To become audible, the air stream must vibrate rapidly. The vocal cords cause the air stream to vibrate.
As we talk, the vocal cords open and close rapidly, chopping up the steady air streem into a series of puffs. These puffs are heard as a buzz. But this buzz is still not speech.
To produce speech sounds, the vocal tract must change shape. During speech we continually after the shape of the vocal tract by moving the tongue and lips ,etc. These movements change the acoustic properties of the vocal tract, which in turn produce the different sounds of speech.

Forests are very important to human life. They give us water. They provide us with wood for houses, ships, furniture, and as a raw material to make paper and cloth. They also give us other forest products like resin, rattan, etc. The forests provide food for a large population of birds and animals. And millions of people look to the forests as places for recreation, hiking, picknicing, sightseeing, fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities.
But the growth of population and industries have caused damage to the forests.More and more trees are cut down, and large forests are opened to build new roads, towns, factories, and settlements.Man has made a lot of changes to the world, and upset the balance of nature

How does the body react to heat ?
When the human body is exposed to very hot conditions one result can be heatstroke. This is often the case for athletes and people who have to work outside in summer.
Heatstroke is a sudden, uncontrolled rise in body temperature. It is a reaction that result from the human body not being able to replace fluid lost through perspiration. If the lost fluids are not replaced then dehydration occurs and this leads to a decrease in blood.
In this situation the body must decide whether to give the blood to the main organs ( liver, kidneys, brain, and so on) or to the skin.Because the main organs are more important, they will receive the blood. Also, as a consequence of the drop in fluids, the body loses its ability to sweat. The situation becomes critical. The body now cannot produce sweat; therefore it cannot cool itself.Excess heat cannot be released through the skin as a result of the loss of blood supply to that part of the body. The lack of blood supply and the ability to sweat together cause the body to overheat.
Heatstroke can cause permanent injury if not treated properly. It is one way of how the body can react to heat.

Dear Sue,
How are you? Sorry I haven’t written for so long but I have been doing my final exams. It’s been all work and no play makes Barbara a dull girl! So nothing very exciting has been happening
Something did happen in the chemistry exam Geoff and I sat for last week that might give you a good laugh.
We were sitting there on those really uncomfortable benches, when all of a sudden I felt something crawling across my foot. When I looked down there was this dirty big cockroach and you know how I hate them. Naturally I screamed and jumped up on the chair and in the process knocked all Geoff’s papers off into the bin beside him.
You can imagine what an idiot I felt when the supervisor came running over. Everybody was looking at me, of course, because you know what it’s like. You can’t sneeze, cough or anything in those exam room.
I guess you’re thinking that this could only happen to me and you’re right.
Anyway, nothing much else has been going on. Geoff says hi! He might write to you himself one day but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Wish you were here.
Love,
Barbara.

I was still forty two years old and my husband was forty five.We lived happily with three children. All of them were cute, healthy daughters. The oldest was in the third year of junior high school, the second was in the second year , and the youngest was still in the third year of elementary school.
Then, one day in December, my husband passed away because of renal failure – kidney disease. How hard the life was.I became a singgle parent. I had to take care and comfort my three daughters while earning the living.
But, God never sleeps. By giving lesson in the afternoon, I got extra money. I worked hard everyday from seven in the morning until eight in the evening. I had no vacation at all . There was no Sunday for a holiday in my calendar! Keeping busy,my daughters and I tried to forget the sad condition of being a widow and orphans.
Thank God! Everything ran well. Most of my close friends liked to see our survival. I could renovate my old house wonderfully. Mean while my three daughters grew older and older. It seemed that the trial of hard surviving was fruitfull.

Nowadays, it seems very difficult to ask the students to prepare seriously for a test. Most of the students don’t study well. It’s clearly seen from the followings.
Firstly, they fail to solve even a simple problem or a simple question. They leave blank spaces instead of creating an idea.
Then, if they are forced to do all the items , they’ll give foolish answers which is very far from the main idea. Of course , the teacher has already explained the material of the lesson and given the notes completely before.
Next, the one which is very annoying is some of the students try to cheat by staring at their friends’ work quietly. So, the time for thinking of the problems is lessened only by keeping a watch the teacher to find time to look at the others’ work. What annoyance!
At last, the students just take easy with what they’ve done. They feel such kind is a custom in the students’life or at least in their environment. The strange thing is they never want to realize that there must be something wrong with their preparation before. They also don’t like to be blamed and instead they blame the teacher.
Really, it is another kind of hard job for teachers; that is asking the students or motivating the students to prepare a test seriously.

1. If you find lice or nits, buy a head lice shampoo or lotion and a fine-tooth comb from a pharmacist. Follow direction on the label.
2. After using the shampoo or lotion according to direction, comb the hair with the fine-comb to remove the nits. The hair should be combed from the scalp down to tips with the head held down over a newspaper.
3. Check the whole family and treat the same way if affected. Reapeat treatment in a week to kill from the eggs which may have hatched since the first wash.
4. Wash whole family’s brushes and combs in the shampoo or lotion, dry in the sun.
5. Check children’s hair weekly. Consult your doctor if the previous measures do not get rid of head lice.

OPEN LETTER TO THE PRIME MINISTER
The Hon Rj Hawke, MP
Prime Minister
Parliament Hose
CANBERRA ACT 2600
Dear Prime Minister
Into the Mouths of Babes
We are writing to you because we are concerned about the way food is being advertised to children.
What we eat now affects our health in years to come. Bad dietary habits start while we are very young. For this reason, your Government supports health education that encourages a balanced healthy diet. Australians are encouraged to get the bulk of their nutrients from fresh fruits, vegetables and wholegrain cereals, a lesser amount from meat and dairy products and a very small fraction from foods high in fat, salt and sugar.
TV advertising to children presents a completely different message. Nearly 80% of food advertising pushes fatty snacks or sweets – the very foods that should be eaten least. To make matters worse, these ads take up much of the advertising time. This must be stopped.
TV advertising is powerful and influential. Parents, however strong-willed, find it hard to esist pressures created by this advertising. Children are least able to understand the tricks of the advertising industry.
For the hours when children are the main audience, TV advertising of foods must be made to reinforce, not undermine; the message about a balanced diet. We appeal to you, as Prime Minister, to take the lead in calling together the advertisers, TV networks, consumers and public health bodies to decide how this is to be done.
Your sincerely
Signed by Barbara Biggins and other prominents signatories.

Roads are highly complex structures, vital for the transport of people and goods in modern societies. They must be safe for all sorts of vehicles, many of them travelling at the maximum speed limit. They must be strong enough to withstand the weight of heavily loden trucks and trailers. They must be contoured to allow rainwater to flow off quickly, and, in certain places, they must have barriers to stop vehicles crossing lanes into oncoming traffic. Roads must also have bridges or culverts to span rivers and , where necessary, flyovers to allow vehicles or animals to cross without interfering with the flow of traffic.
A huge operation like this needs a lot of huge machines. Several different types are used, each having a specific purpose.
Bulldozers and scrapers are mainly used on soff ground and in swampy ares. They are used for short-haul jobs in which earth is not moved very far.
Motor scrapers pick up earth from one area and spread it on another. They are essential for dry areas, and can be used for long-haul jobs in which earth may be moved up three kilometers.
There are still many others such as : Hydraulic excavators, Dumpers, Sheep’s foot.
Before any material for the bridges are ordered, designers calculate the load that each particular bridge needs to take. Once this is done, the material needed for each bridge can be ordered well in advance.
Most bridges consist of a series of vertical pillars onto which concrete beams are placed. Bridges are built in sections to allow for the expansion and contraction that takes place as the bridge heats up and cools down.

Blood is the red liquid flowing through your body. As it flows around your body, it is constantly working to feed, clean, and supply oxygen.
Blood travels from the heart through strong, thick-walled vessels called arteries. These divide again and again, becoming smaller until they form tiny vessels narrower than hairs, called capillaries. Oxygen and nutrients seep from the blood through the thin capillary walls to the body parts around. At the same time , carbon dioxide and waste substances seep from body parts into the blood, to be carried away. Capillaries join again and again to form wide vessels called veins, which take blood back to the heart.
In addition to delivering oxygen and nutrients, and carrying away carbon dioxide and wastes, blood has many other vital tasks. It carries body control substances called hormones. It spreads heat evenly around the body from busy, warmer parts such as the heart, liver, and muscles. It forms a sticky clot to seal a cut. It carries many substances that attack germs and other tiny invanders.
Blood has four main parts. The largest is billions of tiny, saucer-shaped red cells, which make up almost half of the total volume of blood and carry oxygen. Second is the white cells, which clean the blood, prevent diseases and fight germs. The third part is billions of tiny platelets, which help blood to clot. Fourth is watery plasma, in which the other parts float.

The periode at the end of the study in SMA is not as simple as the previous two years. It needs much energy, fund, and extra concentration besides having a high sense of preparing the future. So, the students who live far from school should think of living on a boarding house to avoid having more burden.
Going back and forth more than 30 minutes everyday spends a lot things for the 12th year students of this school. The main first thing is health condition .The students who have good body condition may feel nothing They should realize , however, that tiring condition will never tolerate them to either think well or get maximum thinking. Living in a boarding house near the school , they can have more time to rest.
Other thing is about fund spending. The students of the 12th year are usually given extra lessons in the afternoon. It means they must be given double fund, for the transport fare and for the lunch, besides other kinds of activities ,such as photocopying , trying out, following certain programs, etc. If they don’t go back and forth home everyday, they can save some of the transport money.
But on the other hand, the students say that living in a boarding house causes them some discomfort, too. Being discomfort, they can’t concentrate themselves to their study. Small troubles in the boarding house, such as getting headache, stomachache, or homesick, will ruin their study concentration. Although feeling tired, they can study well at home.
Some students who never work at home give very simple reasons: they aren’t used to wash and iron their clothes,or prepare the meal. When they are not at home, all of these burden them and lower the spirit of their study.
Still other reasons, they need parents’ advice more regularly while preparing the future. They can consult whatever they think anytime, when they are at home.Even, there is a reason from the
parents who can’t be left by their children.
Every person have their own reasons. The decision is on them. The students should remember, however, the need for their future and the condition on being a student. Because good thinking comes only from fresh mind in the healthy body. Let’s make the best of what you have, students.

A few survivors of Sunday’s calamity have a snake to thank for being alive.
Riza, a 26-year-old clothes vendor, said that at about 08.00 a.m. she was enjoying the holiday in bed when suddenly she saw walls of water, mud, rocks and branches into the neighbourhood. People were screaming and running. Riza, who was living in a rented house near the coast in Banda Aceh with three friends, dashed up to the second floor of a neighbour’s home and stood on top of a cupboard.
But as she told Antara from a makeshift shelter on Wednesday, the current swept her and her friends off their perch. As Riza was drifting, she saw her neighbours, two girls-twins- and their mother.
Riza, who can swim, managed to help the girls. She saw their mother was badly injured.
The mother shouted, “Please help save my children. Let me be, but please save my children,” Riza recounted, in tears.
As she struggled for her own life and that of the twins, she said a large snake as long as a telephone pole approached her. She and the nine-year-old rested on the reptile, which was drifting along with the current.
“Thank God, we landed on higher grounf where the water level was only about a meter deep. The twins, who were badly injured, were save.” Riza then slapped her face to make sure she was not dreaming.
Riza, who is currently taking refuge in the Bandar Blang Bintang area, plans to go to her relative’s house in Medan, North Sumatra.
“God still loves me,” she said, adding that she would never forget the tragedy.
